The exhibition opens in conjunction with the 2017 National Basketry Organization’s conference in Tacoma, Washington. From black bamboo to reclaimed plastics, it represents a broad range of approaches by artists working within the field of contemporary basketry. Showcasing excellence in creative exploration, technique, craftsmanship, these 70 artworks were juried by Lloyd Herman, the founding Director of the Smithsonian Institution’s Renwick Gallery from 1971 – 1986. Herman is also the author of Art That Works: The Decorative Arts of the Eighties, Crafted in America. He lives and works in Seattle, Washington. Merging Art and Science: Nathalie Miebach's The Little Ones

Award-winning sculptor Nathalie Miebach translates science data into sculpture, principally using weaving and musical notations as a way of expressing her observations in a three-dimensional space. Central to her work is her desire to explore the role visual and musical aesthetics play in the translation and understanding of complex scientific systems, particularly in areas such as meteorology, ecology, and oceanography. The Society of Arts + Crafts is proud to present Miebach’s data-driven piece “The Last Show Was For The Bleachers” as well as a new non-data series, The Little Ones. Her work will be on exhibit on the Project Wall from March 29th until June 9th, 2018. 

Nathalie on The Little Ones: “About a year ago I began to integrate a “Play Day” in my weekly studio practice, a day I only focus on color and form and try not to think about data or concept. The Little Ones is a series of sculptures that were made during my “Play Day.” On the surface, they can be read as explorations of color and form. To me, though, they are short but important journeys in which I have a chance to discover sculpture on its own terms, without having to carry the weight of data.” 

On "The Bleachers": "After Hurricane Sandy, I began a series called The Sandy Rides that takes data from the night Hurricane Sandy hit and translates it into sculptures and wall pieces. This piece is an aerial map of the New Jersey / New York shoreline, and translates wind, pressure, and wave height data. As the drama of the storm plays itself out, a series of domino pieces sitting on the bleachers, representing retired hurricanes, look on as Sandy will soon join them on these benches."

Miebach is the recipient of numerous awards and residencies, including a Pollock-Krasner Award, TED Global Fellowship, two Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowships, and the Virginia A. Groot Foundation Award. Her work is shown nationally and abroad, and has been reviewed by publications spanning fine arts, design, and technology.
